Fameuse is a heritage apple variety with a rich history in American orchards.

Origin Disputed; either France in the late 1600s or developed from French seedlings in Quebec, Canada; documented in Canada by 1739
Harvest Season Early fall (late September to early October)
Flavor Profile Sweet with vinous (wine-like) quality; hints of strawberry and almond aroma; crisp, juicy, bright white flesh

History

Name means 'famous' in French. Also called Snow Apple, Chimney Apple, and Pomme de Neige. Was the most common apple in Quebec for over 100 years. Believed to be an ancestor of the McIntosh apple.
