Named after Catherine Pavlovna, Grand Duchess of Oldenburg, sister of Tsar Alexander. Also known as Borovinka in Russia. Imported to USA in 1835 by Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Foundation of University of Minnesota's cold-hardy apple breeding program.
