Pear

Anna Nelis

Origin & History

Raised by M. Grégoire of Jodoigne, Belgium, from a bed of mixed seeds sown in 1835. First reported in 1849. Reference: Leroy, Dictionnaire Pomologique, 1:150 (1867).

Fruit

Quality: Second quality for dessert.

Season/Maturity: April to May.

⚠ NOTE: The source document (Hedrick, 1921) provides minimal pomological detail for this variety. Critical identification information is absent, including:

  • Fruit size, weight, or dimensions
  • Form and shape (round, oblong, pyriform, etc.)
  • Skin color, surface texture, and markings (russetting, spotting)
  • Cavity and calyx structure
  • Stem characteristics
  • Flesh color, texture, and flavor descriptors
  • Core and seed appearance
  • Tree growth habit, vigor, and bearing characteristics

This brevity was common in early 20th-century references for lesser-known or "second quality" varieties. To fully identify an unknown Anna Nelis specimen, consult contemporary 19th-century Belgian pomological sources (particularly Grégoire's own documentation or the original Leroy entry) which may contain the detailed morphological descriptions necessary for reliable identification.
