Origin and History

An old Irish variety, introduced to notice by Messrs. Hartland, of Ard Cairn, Co. Cork, cited in The Garden, 1911, p. 570.

Tree

Growth rather upright and compact. Leaves long oval, upfolded, coarsely serrate.

Fruit

Size and Form: Medium; 2¾ by 2¾ inches; round conical.

Color and Skin: Dark red, nearly covered with pale russet.

Calyx and Basin: Eye closed in a moderate even basin.

Stem and Cavity: Stem very long and slender in a deep narrow cavity.

Flesh and Flavor: Yellow, firm; good russet flavor.

Season and Uses

Dessert variety. Season: January to February.

ARD CAIRN RUSSET. Garden, 1911, 570. Dessert, January to February, medium, 2¾ by 2¾, round conical. Colour, dark red, nearly covered with pale russet. Flesh, yellow, firm, good russet flavour. Eye, closed in a moderate even basin. Stem, very long and slender in a deep narrow cavity. Leaf, long oval, upfolded, coarsely serrate. Growth, rather upright, compact. Origin, an old Irish variety, introduced to notice by Messrs. Hartland, of Ard Cairn, Co. Cork.
