Origin/History

Raised by Charles Ross from the Scarlet Nonpareil and introduced by Messrs. Cheal and Sons in 1893 (first published in Gardeners' Chronicle, 1893). The variety has since dropped out of cultivation, presenting no marked advantages over other varieties of the same season.

ATALANTA. Gard. Chron., 1893. Culinary or dessert, November to January, small, 2¾ by 2¾, conical, irregular. Colour, lemon yellow with red streaks. Flesh, firm, flavour moderate. Growth, moderate, very fertile. Origin, raised by Mr. Chas. Ross, from Scarlet Nonpareil, and introduced by Messrs. Cheal and Sons, in 1893. It has now dropped out of cultivation, presenting no marked advantages over other varieties of the same season.
