Athabasca

Origin and History

Athabasca was received into the U.S. Department of Agriculture collection from Canada in three separate accessions during the mid-twentieth century. The earliest accession (128399) was obtained from M. B. Davis of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1938. The variety is recorded as a hybrid of Malus baccata × pumila parentage, with station number A38672. Two additional accessions were received from Canada in 1944 (accession 148704) and 1946 (accession 155451), indicating the variety's establishment in North American germplasm collections during this period.
