Autocrat
PearAUTOCRAT
ORIGIN AND HISTORY A seedling of Beurre Capiaumont, introduced in 1881 and first described in the Journal of Horticulture, London (3rd Series, Vol. 3, p. 260) as a new variety.
TREE CHARACTERISTICS Very hardy, robust, and free-bearing. Distinct in growth habit from its parent variety.
FRUIT Very large. Reported as quite distinct in fruit character from Beurre Capiaumont, though the original description does not provide detailed measurements, form, color, or texture.
SEASON Ripens at the end of October.
NOTE ON SOURCE LIMITATION: The original description from the Journal of Horticulture is extremely brief and provides no information on fruit measurements, form (pyriform vs. globular), skin color, surface texture, cavity and calyx details, flesh quality, flavor, or core structure. For complete identification characteristics, a specimen description or additional contemporary sources would be needed. The variety appears to have been grown in England but may be rare or extinct now, which may explain the lack of detailed pomological documentation.
