Origin and History

Battleford was received by multiple United States research institutions from Canadian sources. The Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station in Wooster, Ohio obtained the variety from an experimental station in Canada. The U.S. Horticultural Field Station in Cheyenne, Wyoming received Battleford from Boughen Nursery in Manitoba, Canada (Station No. A48390) and identified it as a seedling of Russian origin from Saskatchewan. The Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Alaska in Palmer, Alaska also received material from Boughen Nursery in Manitoba, Canada.
