Bedford Red was received by the USDA from Westminster Nursery, Westminster, Maryland in 1938. The variety was documented by H.H. Fisher in A Survey of Apple Clones in the United States (1963), based on reports from the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York.

Flesh: Yellow-cream in color. Subacid in flavor.
