California Sweet was received by the USDA from R. W. Pattee and documented in the 1963 survey A Survey of Apple Clones in the United States by H.H. Fisher of the USDA Agricultural Research Service. The variety was reported by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York.
