Childs Red was received from LeRoy Childs of Hood River, Oregon. The variety was documented by H.H. Fisher of the USDA Agricultural Research Service in A Survey of Apple Clones in the United States (1963), where it was assigned the station accession number AP-H-210.
The variety was reported and maintained by the Agricultural Research Service Irrigation Experiment Station in Prosser, Washington, and the Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.
