Raised by Mr. Mackie of Clyde, Wayne County, New York. Warder (1867) classifies it among the Oblong Apples, Irregular, Sour, Striped.

Tree

Vigorous, upright, very productive.

Fruit

Size: Large.

Form: Roundish, conic. Downing and Warder describe it as angular; Elliott and Thomas describe it as slightly ribbed.

Skin: Ground color greenish and oily according to Downing; pale greenish yellow according to Elliott. Sprinkled and mottled with dull red, and bright red in the sun (Downing). Elliott describes it as striped and mottled with light red, deep crimson in the sun. Thomas describes it as striped and mottled red on greenish yellow.

Stem: Short, slender, inserted in an acute cavity (Downing). Elliott describes the cavity as deep. Thomas describes the stem as deep set.

Calyx: Closed, set in a small corrugated basin (Downing). Elliott and Thomas describe the basin as furrowed.

Flesh & Flavor: White, sub-acid. Downing describes the flesh as tender, juicy, with a brisk sub-acid flavor. Elliott describes it as fine-grained, juicy, sub-acid. Thomas describes it as fine-grained, sub-acid.

Quality: Rated Good by Downing; rated fair by Thomas.
