Origin and History

Connell Red is a red sport of Fireside. The variety was distributed in the United States during the mid-twentieth century through multiple nurseries, including Farmers Seed & Nursery Company (Faribault, Minnesota), Summit Nursery (Stillwater, Minnesota), Connell, Schneider & Connell (Menominee, Wisconsin), Kelly Bros. (Danville, New York), Gurney Seed & Nursery Company (Yankton, South Dakota), Mt. Arbor Nursery (Shenandoah, Iowa), and Rich & Sons Nursery. By 1963, it had been received and evaluated at multiple agricultural research stations across the United States, including facilities in North Dakota, Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Missouri, Oregon, and Minnesota.

Flavor and quality: Excellent dessert quality.

Storage: Stores well until April or May.

The fruit is very large, of excellent dessert quality. Skin color is red; it stores well until Apr. or May. Very hardy.
