Cornwall was received from F. W. Cornwall of Pultneyville, New York. It is a limb sport (bud sport) on McIntosh. The variety was documented and reported by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology at Geneva, New York; the Graham Horticultural Experiment Station at Grand Rapids, Michigan; and the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine.
