Origin and History

Early Redbird was received by the USDA Agricultural Research Service from multiple sources during the mid-twentieth century. Specimens were obtained from Inter-State Nursery in Hamburg, Iowa (Station Number N5823) and from Stark Bros. in Louisiana, Missouri (Station Number 3-36976). The variety was documented and reported by agricultural experiment stations at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul (MnS); Iowa State University, Ames (IoA); Pennsylvania State University, University Park (PaU); and Purdue University, Lafayette (InL). A specimen was also reported by the U.S. Plant Introduction Station at Glenn Dale, Maryland (MdG).
