Elk River was received by the USDA from Glenn Dale, Maryland in 1950 and assigned USDA Plant Introduction number 127693. The variety was reported by the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont (Station number 20). A tetraploid form of the variety was also received from Glenn Dale, Maryland and reported by the Agricultural Experiment Station of Rutgers, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
