Erie

Origin and History

Erie was received by multiple United States agricultural experiment stations during the mid-twentieth century from various sources. The University of Missouri's Agricultural Experiment Station received accession PI No. 148705 from Canada in 1944, with notation that Erie is a seedling of Malus pumila variety Niedzwetzkyana. The University of Vermont's Agricultural Experiment Station received Erie (PI No. 148705, Station No. 18) from Brand Peony Farms in Faribault, Minnesota, in 1950. The University of Minnesota's Agricultural Experiment Station at St. Paul received Erie from the Dominion Experimental Farm in Morden, Manitoba, Canada, with the comment that it is a "rosy-bloom crab." Erie was also received by Pennsylvania State University's Agricultural Experiment Station from Glenn Dale, Maryland.
