Farley was received from Greening Nursery Company, Monroe, Michigan. The variety is a red sport of McIntosh. It was reported and evaluated by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology at Geneva, New York; the Graham Horticultural Experiment Station in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois.
