Flat Voronesh

Apple

Flat Voronesh

Origin/History

Originates from Russia. A test planting at the Central Experimental Farm in Agassiz, British Columbia was established in spring 1895.

Tree

A strong grower and free producer. Not described further in sources.

Fruit

Size and Form

The two sources conflict on form: the Central Experimental Farm describes the fruit as above medium in size and oblong in shape; Hansen describes it as large and oblate (regular). Both agree it is regular and uniform.

Stem

Medium length (Hansen).

Cavity

Regular, acute, with a little radiating russet (Hansen).

Calyx

Half open; segments erect convergent (Hansen).

Basin

Deep, abrupt, smooth, regular, or nearly so (Hansen).

Skin

The two sources offer conflicting descriptions of the skin color. The Central Experimental Farm describes the skin as smooth, yellowish white, splashed with red. Hansen describes the surface as green, sparsely striped red, with dots that are white, minute, and obscure. The difference may reflect different stages of maturity or different selection strains.

Flesh and Flavor

Flesh white, with some green veinings (Hansen); juicy, fine grained (Hansen). Both sources agree on a sprightly acid character, though the Central Experimental Farm characterizes it as sub-acid and Hansen as sprightly acid. Quality rated good by both sources. Use: culinary (Hansen).

Core and Seeds

Core closed, sessile. Tube large, conical, open to core. Stamens median (Hansen).

Season

September (Central Experimental Farm); Fall (Hansen).

Uses

Culinary.
