Franchot originated in Otsego County, New York. It was documented by Downing (first referenced in Downing, 1869, p. 182), with a further account appearing in Downing's The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America (1900). As of Beach's writing in 1905, the variety was reported as no longer being propagated.
