Frank Red was received from Frank Rypczynski of Hood River, Oregon. It originated as a limb sport on a 7-year-old Starking tree. The variety was documented by H.H. Fisher in the USDA Agricultural Research Service survey conducted in 1963, assigned Station No. AP-H-356 and reported through the Agricultural Research Service Irrigation Experiment Station at Prosser, Washington.
