Frantz was documented in a 1963 USDA survey of apple clones in the United States. The variety was received from two separate sources:

  • From the Field Station at Hermiston, Oregon (Station No. AP-H-238), reported by the Agricultural Research Service, Irrigation Experiment Station, Prosser, Washington.
  • From Sondregger's Nursery, Beatrice, Nebraska (Station No. A32674), reported by the U.S. Horticultural Field Station, Cheyenne, Wyoming.
