Fruitland Red Spur was received from Garnefix Nursery in Fruitland, Idaho, in 1958. The variety was documented by H.H. Fisher (USDA ARS) as part of a survey of apple clones in the United States conducted in 1963, with evaluation conducted at the Agricultural Experiment Station, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon.
