Origin and History

Fukutami was received by the USDA from Glenn Dale in 1953 (Plant Introduction No. 195826). The variety resulted from a cross between Jonathan and Ralls Janet.

Fruit

Size and Form Medium fruit, slightly oval in shape.

Skin Approximately one-half covered with attractive stripes.

Flesh and Flavor Creamy and firm flesh with subacid flavor. Quality rated as good. Very good as a dessert apple.

Season and Storage

Ripens very early October. Liable to water core in storage.

The variety was evaluated at two reporting stations: the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York, and the Agricultural Experiment Station, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana. Testing on R12740-7A rootstock was negative after 2 years.
