Gardner was received by the Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva, New York from Gardner, Yakima, Washington in 1933, where it was assigned the station accession number Gardner. The variety was also maintained at the Agricultural Experiment Station, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, which received its specimen from the Geneva station.

Gardner is reported by two stations. The Agricultural Experiment Station, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania received this variety from AES, Geneva, N.Y. The Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York received it from Gardner, Yakima, Wash. in 1933, with a station accession number of Gardner; the fruit is of the Delicious type, with light red color, solid or blush.
