Grady Golden was received by the USDA Agricultural Research Service from Stark Bros. Nursery, Louisiana, Missouri, in 1949. It was reported by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York. The variety was reportedly marketed as a giant type of Golden Delicious.
