Origin and History

Greasy Pippin was represented in the USDA Plant Introduction program by two accessions, both received from Ireland in 1953. Plant Introduction No. 203812 was reported by the U.S. Plant Introduction Station, Glenn Dale, Maryland. Plant Introduction No. 206024 was initially reported by the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station and subsequently distributed to the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York and the Agricultural Experiment Station, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana. Plant Introduction No. 203812 was additionally received at the Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri (Station No. 13) in 1959.

Size and Form: Fruit large, uniform in size. Shape variable, described as round-oblong inclined to conical.

Skin: Thin, smooth, waxy yellow ground color with occasional russet.

Subtypes and Variants

Two distinct USDA Plant Introduction clones are documented:

  • Plant Introduction No. 206024: Fruit large, uniform in size, variable in shape (round-oblong inclined to conical); skin thin, smooth, waxy yellow with occasional russet; flesh green-yellow, firm, crisp, very juicy, subacid; quality good.

  • Plant Introduction No. 203812: Fruit large, yellow, very juicy.

The two accessions show some variation in description, particularly regarding flesh color and uniformity of characterization.
