Origin and History
Hardeman was received by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in 1955 from R. Hardemann at Van Voorkes Farm, Red Bank, New York. The variety was evaluated at the reporting station NyG (Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology, Geneva, New York). A duplicate accession was also received from the Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva, New York.

The fruit exhibits a darker color than standard Delicious, as noted in contemporary reports.

Hardeman matures earlier than standard Delicious.

The variety was documented in H.H. Fisher's A Survey of Apple Clones in the United States (USDA ARS, 1963) as part of systematic evaluation of apple germplasm in cultivation across the United States during the mid-twentieth century.
