Jewel was received in the United States from Canada in 1944. The variety is reported to be a hybrid of Malus baccata and Yellow Transparent. The accession was held at the U.S. Plant Introduction Station, Glenn Dale, Maryland (accession PI No. 148478), and was also reported by the Agricultural Experiment Station of Rutgers, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
