Origin / History

Origin, Russia. Fruit much like true Romna, but, in Hansen's words, "tree has a roundish, somewhat flattened top while Romna is quite upright in habit." Planted in spring 1895 at the Central Experimental Farm, Agassiz, B.C., and listed in the Catalogue of Fruit Trees under Test (Bulletin No. 3, 1900).

Tree

A strong grower (Agassiz). Top roundish, somewhat flattened, whereas Romna "is quite upright in habit" (Hansen).

Fruit

Size: Large (Hansen); medium (Agassiz).

Form: Very regular, conical (Hansen); roundish, ribbed (Agassiz).

Stem: Medium.

Cavity: Regular, acuminate, narrow, with radiating russet.

Calyx: Open, segments divergent. Tube conical; stamens median.

Basin: Abrupt, narrow, regular, medium.

Skin: Surface green, with dull bronze blush on the sunny side, roughened by dots (Hansen); yellowish with a reddish blush (Agassiz).

Dots: Distinct, numerous, minute, russet.

Flesh and flavor: Flesh white or whitish, juicy; firm (Agassiz). Pleasant, mild subacid (Hansen); brisk acid (Agassiz). Quality "good" in both Hansen and Agassiz.

Core and seeds: Core closed, sessile; cells axile, ovate, slit, large, rounded. Seeds thirteen, short, plump.

Season

Winter (Hansen). Early August at Agassiz, B.C.

Core closed, sessile; cells axile, ovate, slit, large, rounded; tube conical; stamens median; seeds thirteen, short, plump; flesh white, juicy, pleasant, mild subacid, good. Winter.
