Korei is a hybrid apple variety resulting from a cross of Golden Delicious × Indo. The variety was received by the USDA from Japan in 1952 and was assigned USDA Plant Introduction number 199527. It was initially received and evaluated at the U.S. Plant Introduction Station, Glenn Dale, Maryland.

Korei was evaluated and maintained under multiple station numbers and at multiple reporting stations: station numbers 124 and AF-H-360 at the Agricultural Experiment Station of Rutgers (New Brunswick, New Jersey), the Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of Connecticut (Storrs, Connecticut), the Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology (Geneva, New York), the Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of Vermont (Burlington, Vermont), and the Agricultural Research Service, Irrigation Experiment Station (Prosser, Washington). The variety showed negative results for disease resistance testing (R12740-7A) at the reporting station InLO after 2 years.
