Lyons was received by the USDA Agricultural Research Service from the Agricultural Experiment Station in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1959. It was documented in H.H. Fisher's survey of apple clones conducted across the United States in 1963, with the reporting station being the U.S. Horticultural Field Station in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
