Macy is a deliberate cross of N.W. Greenings and Wealthy, originated at Ames by H. L. Lantz. The variety was received in the United States from Canada in 1942 and assigned USDA Plant Introduction number 144020. It was reported by the U.S. Horticultural Field Station, P.O. Box 1250, Cheyenne, Wyoming, where it was assigned station number A32972.
