Marin Onfroy was received in the United States from France in 1949, assigned USDA Plant Introduction number 173982. An additional source plant was also received from Glenn Dale, Maryland. The variety was documented in a 1963 survey of apple clones in the United States conducted by H.H. Fisher of the USDA Agricultural Research Service.
