McDonald Spurred Red was received from Frank McDonald of West Summerland, British Columbia, via the Summerland Research Station. The variety was documented by H.H. Fisher of the USDA Agricultural Research Service in A Survey of Apple Clones in the United States (1963). It was assigned station numbers AP-H-319 and AP-H-320 and evaluated at the Agricultural Research Service Irrigation Experiment Station in Prosser, Washington.
