Red Duchess was documented in the United States by 1952, with accessions received from multiple commercial nurseries and agricultural experiment stations during the mid-twentieth century. Known accessions originated from Strands Nursery, Taylor Falls, Minnesota (station number A33660); Kelly Bros. Nursery, Inc., Dansville, New York (received 1952, station number 156); and the Agricultural Experiment Station at Ames, Iowa.
