Origin/History

Found in the Royal Gardens at Frogmore, and said to have been raised by Mr. Powell. It has been given up from cultivation as it is very liable to canker.

Growth habit: Strong, wide spreading. Fertility: Fair.

Fruit

Size and form: Large; 3 by 2¼ inches; round conical, slightly irregular.

Skin: Pale yellowish-green with russet nettings.

Stem: Short and stout, in a shallow cavity.

Calyx and basin: Eye open; in a very shallow basin.

Flesh and flavor: Soft, yellow, juicy (almost Reinette-like), sub-acid.

Core and seeds: Not described in source.

Season

Keeps till March.

Uses

Culinary.

ROYAL LATE. Gard. Chron., 1896, p. 114. Culinary, till March, large, 3 by 2¼, round conical, slightly irregular. Colour, pale yellowish-green with russet nettings. Flesh, soft, yellow, juicy (almost Reinette like), sub-acid. Eye, open, in a very shallow basin. Stem, short and stout, in a shallow cavity. Growth, strong, wide spreading; fertility, fair. Origin, found in the Royal Gardens, at Frogmore, and said to have been raised by Mr. Powell. It has now been given up as it is very liable to canker.
