This variety was imported from France into Hartford, Connecticut many years before 1856 and has been somewhat extensively distributed by Alfred Smith, Esq., of that city, from whom it takes its common name. The true or original name remains unknown.

The fruit is of medium size, acute pyriform in shape, with a dull greenish russet coat. The flesh is juicy and buttery, and the flavor peculiar, sprightly and spicy.
