Origin and History
This fine winter apple originated with Thomas Stearns of Jackson, Indiana. It is also known as Stearns' Winter Greening.
Tree
The tree is said to be very hardy, a strong and vigorous grower, making a round, symmetrical head. It is an early, annual, and abundant bearer, and is highly esteemed where known.
Fruit
Form and Size: Medium; oblate, slightly flattened at the ends, slightly angular.
Skin: Pale green, with a pale blush of brown in the sun, and a few scattering brown dots.
Stem: Short and small.
Cavity: Rather large and deep.
Calyx: Closed.
Basin: Large, deep, and corrugated.
Flesh and Flavor: Fine-textured, pale yellow, tender, and juicy, with a mild subacid, rich flavor. Quality very good.
Core: Small or medium.
Season
December through April.
