Origin and History
University (Duchess No. 103) originated about 1882 from seed of the Duchess variety, raised by C. G. Patten of Charles City, Iowa.
Fruit
Size and Form
Large, oblate, very regular.
Skin
Clear yellow base color with orange yellow on the sunny side. Dots minute and white; some distinct russet dots with white bases.
Cavity
Wide, deep, obtuse, and regular.
Stem
Short to medium.
Basin
Very wide and shallow, with irregular prominences around the eye.
Calyx
Open, with segments flat and convergent.
Core and Seeds
Core partially open, clasping. Cells round and widely slit. Tube funnel-shaped. Stamens marginal. Seeds not many but plump.
Flesh and Flavor
Yellow flesh with some yellow veinings. Pleasant subacid flavor. Quality very good.
