Grimes Golden is a heritage apple variety with a rich history in American orchards.

Origin Fowlersville (near Wellsburg), Brooke County, West Virginia, USA; discovered around 1805 on Thomas Grimes' farm
Harvest Season Mid to late fall (late September)
Flavor Profile Spicy, sweet with nuances of nutmeg, coriander, and citrus; high sugar content; crisp, tender flesh
Storage Excellent - stores very well

  • Hard cider (ferments to 9% alcohol)

History

Legend says it grew from a seed planted by Johnny Appleseed. The original tree blew down in 1905 after bearing fruit for a century. Believed to be one parent of Golden Delicious. Site became Grimes Golden Park.
