Origin / History

An old pear of uncertain origin. The variety was mentioned by La Quintinye in 1690 without description. In 1768, Duhamel du Monceau provided a careful description to distinguish Deutsche Muskateller from Royale d'Hiver, which it somewhat resembles. The variety has been documented under the synonyms Muscat Allemand d'Hiver and German Muscat.

Fruit

Size and Form: Medium or above; obovate-obtuse-pyriform.

Skin: Pale yellow, speckled with numerous large, gray dots.

Flesh and Flavor: Yellowish, semi-fine, semi-melting, juicy, granular, sweet, slightly astringent. Quality rating: second.
