Size and color very much like Jonathan, but keeps three months longer; quality even better than that most excellent apple. The apple for the fancy trade. Illinois Horticultural Society: "The original Akin tree is 7 feet 3 inches in circumference, about 40 feet high, and over 60 years old; a regular bearer; keeps until April or May. Of great beauty and excellent quality; fine-grained, crisp, spicy and mild. Its fine quality and beauty make it worthy of general trial, for the time will come when such fruit will be in demand. So beautifully colored as to be almost irresistible to the eye, and of equally fine flavor. It is of good quality, medium size, red color, a late keeper. Tree productive."

Large and handsome, flesh juicy with a pleasant aromatic flavour, a variety which when grown under glass produces particularly handsome fruit, it forms a large pyramid and is suitable for the orchard. September to December.

Medium, a very fine late flat fruit, of exceptionally good flavour; compact grower. First Prize as late dessert sort. F.C., R.H.S., May 14th. Season: April-May.

Medium; has taken a front rank; reports from all parts testify to its value for dessert and as a reliable cropper. In shape it approaches Cox's Orange, but is much handsomer, and the flavour is richer and more brisk than that variety. Standards, 2/6 and 5/0; Dwarfs, 2/6 and 2/6; Pyramids, 5/0 and 7/6. Large and firm, will keep eight months, the tree is of robust growth and bears abundantly, it forms a large pyramid and a good standard. F.C.C. February to May.

This is one of the true ironclads. The tree is of Russian origin and perfectly hardy, withstanding our coldest winters in fine shape. The fruit is large, slightly oblong, and when fully ripe of a light golden color. Good keeper.

A new Russian variety; large, roundish, dark red with a purple bloom; flesh white, sub-acid; a handsome apple. Hardy. Oct. to Nov.

A recently introduced variety. Large, beautiful, no painting more perfect in color, one of the most beautiful apples we know, and is one of the most beautiful we ever saw. Size, large; color, beautiful light crimson in the shade, darker in the sun, with indistinct splashes and stripes over whole surface of dark crimson. Flesh, fine grained, whitish, tinged with red and yellow. Flavor, rich sub-acid. A commanding market apple. Nov. to March.

Tree a beautiful upright grower; young wood very dark; an abundant bearer. U.S. Pomologist Van Deman, in report, 1886, says: "There is scarcely an apple that is more brilliantly colored. Size, 2-1/2 to 3 inches in diameter; round or slightly conical; regular; smooth, glossy, yellow where not covered with deep crimson, almost black; flesh very yellow, firm, fine grained, juicy; flavor, sub-acid, pleasant, rich." A long keeper, almost equaling the Romanite Gilpin. A most profitable and attractive market apple. Has been kept till June and later.

"It stands on a record of fifty years, and it is all that is claimed for it." Produced from New England Baldwin stock, propagated by C.W. Babbitt in Woodford Co., Ill., in 1844 or 1845. A very strong, large grower; shoots large; leaves very large; wood hard and tough. As a market apple it is mechanically the best tree known. It scarcely forks at all. After 42 years acquaintance, in three States in three different latitudes, and growing from three distinctly different soils, does not hesitate to place among the very best in either nursery or orchard.

Tree hardy, vigorous and productive. Fruit large, roundish, conical, yellowish, mostly shaded and striped with dark red; flesh white, tender, almost melting with a honeyed sweet flavor. The best late sweet apple. October to November.

Fruit large, one-half larger than Transcendent, flattened, a beautiful golden yellow. Flesh firm, fine grained, juicy, brittle, rich, sweet—a peculiar condensed sweet seldom found in any apple: entirely free from any bitterness or "crabbiness." Great and early bearer; keeps well.

Large, roundish, narrowing a little to the eye; skin yellow in the shade, but nearly covered and striped with red and orange in the sun; flesh crisp, juicy and subacid, rich; tree a vigorous grower and bears abundantly; succeeds well in Western Maryland and the mountains of Virginia, but drops its fruit too early in or near the tidewater section. October to January — later in the mountains.

(Trade-Mark) A cross between Ben Davis and Rome Beauty, combining good qualities of both trees. Brilliantly striped and splashed with red; as large or larger than Ben Davis. NCS

A free bearer, and a sturdy short-jointed grower. In form it is like the Red Quarrenden — flat — and of a very brilliant bronzy red colour; ripens early in September — a time when coloury Apples are wanted — highly recommended to all growers for profit. Medium size, rich flavour and beautiful appearance, free bearer, sturdy growth. September.

A German sort. A very large and beautiful early Fall apple, bright purple and crimson all over; wonderfully handsome; flesh white, firm, sub-acid, with a brisk pleasant flavor; tree a free grower with large, luxuriant foliage and a regular bearer. It is one of the largest and handsomest of all apples, and because of its great beauty, sells at high prices. Ripens here in Aug.

In respect to its early fruiting habit, the most remarkable apple ever introduced; one-year grafts frequently produce fruit and two-year trees seldom fail. Has fruited in many sections of the United States; we hear only words of commendation. A two-year single-stem tree about eighteen inches high, has been known to ripen a fine specimen. Originated in New Zealand; has been tested in nearly every apple-growing country, and promises to succeed wherever apples can be grown, proving healthy, hardy, productive and without a rival in its early fruiting quality. Tree of short, stocky growth, thick, healthy foliage; makes beautiful specimens grown in pots for decorative purposes. Fruit large, handsome; yellow, sometimes shaded, red cheek; flesh tender, pleasant, sub-acid; good for dessert; superior for cooking. Will keep well into winter.

When an apple of the Ben Davis family is wanted, Black Ben should be planted. Will produce more bushels to the tree than Ben Davis. The tree growth is of the Ben Davis character, but stronger, hardier, thriftier, better resister of drouth. In fruit it is large, deep dark red (no stripes). Its wonderful beauty makes it a profit-earner and a big one. NCS

A handsome Austrian variety that has been tested in many sections, and is highly valued by some of our best orchardists. S. D. Willard commends this as a heavy, annual bearer, the fruit for late keeping—"is at its best in the spring"—and of a sprightly tartness that makes it especially valuable for cooking. It always sells at the outside price. It is a very desirable variety for the orchard man. Fruit is medium to large, yellow with red cheek; keeps until April or May. Tree is extremely hardy, with thick heavy foliage.

Planted Spring 1894. Tree a vigorous grower. Fruit above medium size, roundish. Skin greenish yellow, striped with bright red. Flesh white, crisp, firm, juicy, sprightly, quality good. Season August.

Small, roundish oval, skin pale yellow, with a full red cheek, sprinkled with a little russet; flesh yellowish white, very firm and crisp with a smooth, fresh, perfumed flavor.

Large, bright yellow, washed with light red on the sunny side, and sometimes with a sprinkling of russet; flesh crisp, firm, juicy, sprightly, sub-acid; quality very good; a late keeper. Tree a vigorous grower.

"Tree similar to Buckingham or Fall Queen, but more vigorous; fruit also resembles Buckingham, but is larger and more highly colored, our finest early Sept. apple. Sells higher in Nashville than any apple of its season." Ripens with Buckingham or Fall Queen.

Very large handsome fruit of the Peasgood Nonsuch type, which is bound to take a position as an Exhibition variety; most valuable for dessert or kitchen use. Raised by A.S. White, Esq., the noted hop grower. One year trees 2/3 each; two years 3/6 each. Standards, 5/0. Large; the finest orchard fruit; making a vigorous tree. A very valuable heavy late keeper, free and constant bearer when established; flat, with a dull red cheek; first-rate, brisk acid flavour. Grown on Paradise stock, pruned slightly, it makes a fertile garden tree, and is grand as a bush. Standards, 2/6 and 1/6. F.C., R.H.S. Season: December-April.

A novelty in the line of crab apples, being sweet; vig. September.

New. Named by the Fruit Growers' Association of British Columbia. Originated by H. P. Cales, at Nicomen in the Fraser Valley. The tree is a vigorous grower and very hardy, annual and abundant bearer; fruit large; russet on yellow ground, sometimes striped with red; somewhat irregular; flavor mild, subacid of the highest quality. The original tree, when 34 years old, measured 60 inches in circumference, and is still in a perfectly healthy condition. Mr. Cales has now 400 trees of this variety bearing. Mr. Cales has picked 36 50-pound boxes of Apples from it in one season, and always gets from 25 to 50 cents per box more for them than for other varieties. We consider this one of the most valuable Apples to plant for commercial purposes.

Medium size, a fine late apple, very hardy, bearing well in cold soils and situations where others are liable to canker, it forms a medium-sized pyramid and bears well as a standard. March to May.

Origin unknown. A very productive and popular variety; valuable either for market or table use. Often matures in November, but will keep into February. Tree hardy, healthy, moderately vigorous and productive. Fruit medium to large; oblate, inclining to conic; greenish yellow, mostly covered, shaded, striped and splashed with two shades of crimson and sprinkled with light dots. Flesh yellowish, rather coarse breaking, tender, juicy, mild, sprightly sub-acid. Very good to best. November to February.

A famous North Carolina apple. Large, oblong, greenish yellow, nearly covered with deep carmine, tender, juicy, well flavored. Ripe end of September and can be kept until New Year, tree upright grower and prolific, an excellent fruit.

Large; a fruit of great excellence; oil soft, flesh succeeding in warm soils; best on standard, but it demands high culture and should only be planted in warm soils and aspects. There is by working only from vigorous trees and on Paradise stock the canker has been cured, and the fruit produced is grand in size and finish. Season: November-April.

The best long-keeping, sweet winter apple. Of medium size, ovate, smooth and uniform in size and shape. Color bright lemon-yellow, covered with lively crimson next the sun; hangs on the tree until freezing weather, if permitted, and will keep in good condition without any special care whatever until June. In quality it is of the best, being sweet, mild, creamy and pleasant. The tree is a most vigorous and beautiful grower, with stems as straight as bamboo poles. An enormous, annual bearer. 1st class ea., 25c.

Very large, green washed dull brown red, and a thick blue bloom, crisp, sugary, with a very rich aroma. Ripe in September; tree vigorous grower and prolific, a distinct blue cast, and an excellent and desirable fruit. Origin, Col. Carter, Mt. Meig's Depot, Ala.

An old favorite with various names. Very large and showy, and on account of these qualities a valuable fruit for market. Fruit is round and slightly uneven, of a greenish yellow, splashed and marbled with purplish red. Very productive. October to January.

Tree a good grower. A most excellent bearer. Celestia has often been compared with Fall Pippin, and always to the advantage of the former, for while it is free from the defects of Fall Pippin, it has all its excellences and more besides. In first introducing the Celestia, Dr. J.A. Warder, Pres't. Ohio Hort. Society, and author of "American Pomology," wrote: "Everyone to whom I snowed this fruit agrees with me in according the highest rank, as a dessert fruit, to Celestia. It combines so many excellences that it will be difficult to find its compeer. With greater beauty and perfectness in appearance, the Celestia equals, or perhaps excels, the famous Dyer or Pomme Royale. Fruit large, surface smooth waxen-yellow, core small, flesh yellow, very fine grained, very tender, juicy; flavor sub-acid, very sprightly and spicy, aromatic, delicious; quality, very best; use, table and kitchen; season, Sept."

In purchasing it, our idea was that it would take the place of the King of Pippins for dessert or market, as the latter is subject to canker, and can only be grown well in a few localities.
